How do I sign up to be a parade participant?

How long is the parade?
From start to finish, the parade is less than a mile and takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete.

How big of a group can be in the parade?
You can have as many people as you’d like in the parade, so long as you make that clear in your registration and let us know of any changes ahead of time by emailing community@blackjoyparade.org.  

Can we perform and/or have music?
Yes. Please describe this in your registration.

What items are prohibited?

  • No smoking, alcoholic beverages, or glass containers are allowed in the parade.

  • No offensive, political or prejudice pictures, symbols or slogans are allowed on signage, floats, clothing or in general.

  • No nudity is permitted.

The parade committee reserves the right of refusal to any participants deemed inappropriate to the spirit of Black Joy Parade or the general public.

Can youth groups be participants?
Yes, definitely. Groups must have at least one designated adult 21 years or older with them at all times during the parade. The adult will be responsible for the conduct and safety of all groups.

Can my animals or pets be in the parade?
Yes. All animals must be accompanied by an attendant who will clean up staging  re-loading, and procession areas. All animals must be in good health and be able to cope with large crowds, other animals, vehicles and a bustling environment.

How can I perform on Black Joy Parade stages?
Please complete this form here and we will reach out in the event that we have openings.

Please keep in mind that while we do our best to have as many acts as possible, the festival is only a few hours long and there are very limited space for performances on the stages.


Vendor

Is there a cost to participate in Black Joy Parade?
There is no cost to participate in the parade, however, there are fees to participate in the festival as an exhibitor. Fees vary depending on the type of business, or organization.

When does the festival start?
The festival begins at 12pm and ends at 6pm.

How many people do you expect to attend?
We expect between 15,000 and 20,000 people throughout the day. We had 14,000 attendees in 2018.

What does my booth space come with?
The basic fee only covers the 10x10 booth space. We do not provide any tables, chairs, or booth structures, unless they are specifically rented for an additional fee.

How many exhibitor spaces do you have?
We have approximately 104 exhibitor spaces throughout the festival footprint.

What time should I arrive by as an exhibitor?
You may begin loading in as early as 8 AM. If you are driving to the site cars must be in no later than 10 AM. Please keep in mind, if your assigned spot is vacant by 10:30 AM it can be reassigned or used for another purpose.

When is the deadline for payment?
The deadline to pay is February 16, 2019. We do not guarantee participation until we receive your payment in full. Please be advised, the exhibitor spaces may sell out before the deadline, so sales may end early.

Am I allowed to sell/distribute food or beverages?
Food vendors are the only exhibitors permitted to sell or distribute food. If you are not a food vendor and you wish to sell or distribute food, please let us know beforehand. You will need to pay an extra fee and fill out a health permit application. WE DO NOT ALLOW THE SALE OR DISTRIBUTION OF BEVERAGES.

When will I find out where my booth space is?
Approximately one week before the event, we will release Day of Information packets. These packets contain all day of logistics, including booth space location, load in information, load out information, and general event information.

Is there dedicated vendor parking?
No, we do not provide vendor parking. You may park anywhere offsite, however please watch for tow away zones or no parking zones. We are not responsible for any offsite parking citations or theft.

It says my account is disabled. How can I fix that?
Your account is only disabled if you have not activated your email address. Please check your junk, or clutter emails for your activation email. If you still cannot find it, please give us a call at (510) 842-5513 or email us at joinus@blackjoyparade.org.

Volunteer

How do I / my company sign up to volunteer?
We welcome everyone to sign up and volunteer for the day of the parade. We are looking for both individuals and groups. To sign up, click here.

Who can volunteer?
Anybody! We need all the help we can get. This includes people of all ages, races, sex and abilities. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer for those of us that are differently-abled. All minors must be accompanied by at least one adults 21 years or older.

What are the requirements to volunteer during the parade?

  • Complete “Volunteer Sign-up” form in advance, here.

  • Be comfortable with email and online communications

  • Be able to work a minimum of 4 hours

  • Be able to attend a mandatory orientation (dates to be announced)

  • Work well with others people

  • Show your joy!


Can I choose what area I want to volunteer in?
As we get closer to the parade, we will ask for additional information. You will be able to request a specific assignment, but placement may not be guaranteed.

How can I volunteer at promotional events leading up to the parade?
In the event we need additional volunteers for lead-up events, we will reach out directly via email.

What will be covered at the mandatory orientation?
We will cover several items during the orientation. It will include, but not be limited to:

  • Attire for the day

  • Assignments for the day-of

  • Food

  • Storing personal belongings

  • Expectations of behavior

  • General information to answer questions
